Ahhh~ 2023 Spring Tongqinghe Black Tea

$6.50$65.00

Description

Made from spring, small tree material from Tongqinghe (Yiwu), this tea offers more complexity and layers than your average black tea, shifting from brew to brew. A salted caramel flavour dominates in the front, with a slight nuttiness in the background and a tropical fruit quality that develops as well.

Coming from a season as dry as spring 2023, this tea exemplifies how the weather can lead to a denser and more complex black tea. The flavour and sweetness last quite long, both in the mouth and across multiple infusions.

Processing-wise, this tea could be considered a shaihong (sun roasted) black tea, however, it’s finished with a machine roasting to help dial in a unique flavour. We highly recommend this tea for those seeking a more dynamic black tea.

A great black tea that tastes what I’d refer to as very nutty (toasted nuts), caramel-like, yet interestingly fruity in a way that adds an almost juicy quality to the tea. It definitely does have more complexity than a standard black tea and this comes out in a pretty unique freshness I don’t often see. It’s a very enjoyable tea for any occasion and goes on for many steeps. I find this tea works best with more leaves in your brew; 7g / 100ml goes a long way and brings its boldness to the max, as well as the sweetness, giving you a crazy, wild, refreshing, and revitalizing brew.

An excellent black tea from an area extremely suited for sheng pu. This is felt in its delicacy which initially brings back notes of cocoa and ripe fruit, but which then turns towards more complex nuances. It is a red tea on which to stay for a while to understand its sensory finesse and considering the price and the area of origin it is certainly a dianhong to try.

I love Yiwu teas and those from Tongqinghe in particular, and it’s interesting to have good Dianhong from this area. Although it is not a tea of great complexity, I think its finesse is its greatest gift, there is a connection with the sheng puerh of this area. Despite the classic tuber notes of some dianhong, there are aromas of peach, tropical fruit, caramel, cocoa and flowers and a good body that make it a perfect daily drink without give up on good quality. It would be nice to compare it with a sheng made of the same material.

A liquid version of a comforting dessert. Lovely!
//Smell: Cooked fruits, warm raisins bread, salty caramel, tropical fruits, roasted nuts
//Texture: Surprisingly thick texture that stick on the tongue and stay next to the palate, sticky/creamy
//Taste: Caramelized fruits, warm fruits bread, sugary dessert, roasted nuts
//Body sensation: Awake but calm, body heat, present moment

Dry up front, sweet at the tail end, with strong notes of dried fruit. Maybe dried apples and red currants? Loads of oakwood. Drinking this black tea is like a really okay and slightly sweet red wine.
