Beyond the Bitter End 2020 Laomane Shou Puer

$9.50$298.00

Description

You asked for it and you got it. Our Bitter End Laomane is now available in shou-form. As expected, the fermentation process of the raw material yields a tea with a dense body and smooth texture. This texture is layered, arriving in waves and adding complexity to each brew.

While a lot of emphasis is on the mouthfeel and texture, the flavour is also enjoyable. Clean and slightly sweet, this tea has a prominent nuttiness and rice-soup quality that defines its sweet side. While it’s not the sweetest shou out there, it’s also not as bitter as you might expect from a Laomane shou, with only a small residual amount of bitterness showing up.

One thing it does have in common with its raw brother is a great chaqi/energy that creeps up on you. If we had a fireplace, this would be the ideal tea sip while watching the flames dance.

I really like the way this shou blends subtle aromas and flavors – there’s bits of earth, cacao & dark-ish chocolate sweetness, a pine nut note that lingers after the sip, and smooth, almost medicinal orange. If you told me you’d snuck a piece or two of aged chenpi into these leaves, I’d probably believe you. A silky, flowy and coating texture, it all makes for an enjoyably calmed mix of flavors and qi.

Full, clean bitter flavor with loads of complexity plays perfect compliment to a thin silky texture. Round. Refined. The first taste is clean wet rock. As it cools a subtle nuttiness joins in. Roasted cashews alongside a premium chocolate. A hint of hazelnut and marzipan here and there. The bitterness sticks to your back palette but in a clean alluring, keep-me-sippin way.

More cooling, a subtle milk chocolate sweetness is introduced and that elegant nuttiness opens the throttle, eases back, does it again. Wow! Powerful but never overpowering or cloying in any way. This pu is pure class!

My absolute favorite shou from this years: I like his energy and his refinement.
//Smell : Warm cashew nuts, earthy wet trail, warm and sweet cherry dessert, nuts pie, 100% dark chocolate (a bit salty)
//Texture: Spiciness on the tip of the tongue, tingling effect in the cheeks, thick silky texture
//Taste : Medicated note like the stuffed mandarins, nuts pie, earthy, mineral, sweet fruits, complex!
//Body sensation: Astringency, hot cheeks, energy, calm, silence, in the mood to check elements in my to-do list, increased heartbeat

Like sipping a very dark cocoa with plenty of nutty, smoky notes. So so so smooth. A wonderful tea to have a focused session with during a winter day.
