Description
The name says it all. This Bangdong big-tree tea comes with big sweetness. Strong notes of honey are accompanied by a unique and intriguing fragrance, as well as a rolling mouth feel.
Often used as a stunt double for Xigui, Bangdong teas do an excellent job mimicking the fragrance and character of their pricey neighbor at a fraction of the price. This tea represents an excellent balance of cost and quality. For those who enjoyed our 2019 Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Good, then this is the closest thing we have to a follow up for 2020.
Picking period: Pre-April 20
$0.29/gram
Please note: The dragon balls for this tea have been sold out, so samples will still be offered in the same size, but broken from the cake.
All of our samples for spring 2020 are in dragon ball form. While these balls will perform the same as the cake, they can be slightly trickier to brew. Here’s how we do it:

starts off being bitter, but mellows down to have the taste of milk and finally a tinge of honey, with very creamy texture throughout. good thing is that it can last through many steeps.

//Eyes dry leaf
Lovely little cake! Leaves are loosly pressed so it’s pretty easy to grab a chunk for your session. There are some buds and stems but most of the leaves are looking super great (fudgy brown).
//Nose dry leaf
Smell even before you open the wrapping! Creamy honey, floral notes, ligth hay smell
//Nose wet leaf
Acidulous, Sour fruits, gummies made from real fruit juices, ligth humid hay smell, wet rock
//Eyes liquor
Golden-yellow, maple-wood with old yellowish varnish
//Mouth texture
Generous mouth coating. Medium to thick texture
//Mouth taste
Ligth taste (my experience was more about texture), Steamed dumplin dough, boilled vegetables
//Nose Empty Cup
Wet rock mixed with some honey sweetness
//Body sensation
Drying mouth sensation follwed by a lot a salivation. Great mix!
//Brewing notes
1 gram per 20mL | 95C water
Infusion 1 : 13 seconds
Infusion 2 : + 3 seconds
(maybe try 15 + 5 next time)
//Overall impression
Great session but some more tests need to be done in order to find the perfect parameters for my brews.

I tried the dragonball version of this tea with the sampler set.
Smell is very prominent. Creamy and sweet honey.
First steeps have a pretty strong bitter note. No changes in steeping changed this. I didn’t love these first steeps because the bitterness doesn’t balance well with the teas other notes.
But the mid to late steepings are where this tea shines. The bitterness gives way to a honey taste and creamy texture (I am noticing a theme among bitterleaf teas!) that continues for many more brews.
Overall a fan, especially at the $.30/g mark where this tea outshines many others that I have had. I could also see real potential blending this with some of my other puerhs to add mid steep sweetness and texture.

The star of this for is definitely the creamy mouthfeel, especially since I’ve only ever tasted that kind of mily flavor in oolongs before. Other than that however, there isn’t anything too too special about this one. A bit sweet, a bit floral, essentially no bitterness. I’ve found that the smaller cake size also has maybe led to the a higher level of compression than bitterleaf usually presses their teas with. While that’s not a huge deal, one of the reasons that bitterleaf is such a go to for me is because they have the lowest compression around, which in my opinion is not only just more convinient to g, but also leads to fewer broken leaves.
