Eminence 2021 Naka Raw Puer

Description

It’s hard to be good at everything, yet some how this tea manages just that. From the first brew, this old tree Naka places a strong emphasis on mouthfeel and texture, along with a noticeable huigan and aftertaste. From the 2nd or 3rd brew a more prominent flavour comes into play, with characteristic minerality and stone-fruit flavours.

The tea continues to evolve across many infusions in terms of flavour and feeling, making it a good choice for when you want to enjoy a long, focused session.

The local terrain also imparts a nice “Yanyun”, which roughly refers to the inherent qualities of tea that grows in rocky terrain. This is most often associated with Wuyi Yancha, but the same qualities can be found in Naka. While the definition of Yanyun can be a bit difficult to pin down, it tends to relate mostly to the qualities of energy/chaqi, texture, sweetness and flavour/fragrance.

This tea offers a good opportunity for comparison with our OG Naka. While they share many similarities, the older tree distinction highlights a smoother, more refined quality, while the OG Naka maintains some rougher edges and astringency.

Very complex, interesting broth with lots of defined minerality. Initially a bit sweet, one steep later and rocky minerality barrels through the door in both taste and texture. The more you sip, the more it builds. Aroma is curiously tart, like vinegar or buttermilk. Texture-wise it’s pretty dense and somewhat astringent, but not overly soft. A puzzling concoction for my senses. I’d recommend trying this one for a fun session.

Highly sophisticated tea for special occasions. The finesse of the picking is clearly noticeable: tiny glossy leaves attached to their stem. This tea has a generous texture that coats the cheeks with a elastic cream-like wave. Taste-wise it is heavy, mineral (salty?), reminding me cooked vegetables, leather and hay. I definitively recommend you give it a try.

Brief steeps (5-10 seconds) in 90 Celsius water.
Liquor is a clear light yellow in color.
Taste is mellow with a fruity note and a sweet aftertaste.
Mouthfeel slightly sticky with no astringency nor bitterness.
Wet leaves are olive green in color with a yellowish hue, giving off a mild scent of sugared stone fruits.
The huigan is there, though not strong. Still, it makes me a little bit sleepy.
Empty cup leaves a soft sweet aroma, though it doesn’t linger long.
The flavor intensity starts to mellow down by the 5th/6th infusion, thus best to do a longer steep from here onwards.
A (1 minute) steep gives a more golden hue to the liquor color, but not much of a flavor difference apart from additional hints of astringency to the palate, and still no bitterness.

I found a young sheng that was very refined but somewhat too polite for my tastes. Great Naka profile of rocks and veggies.
