Plum Beauty 2019 Mengsong Raw Puer

A perennial favourite with both our customers and ourselves, this tea carries a deep fragrance and floral flavour. There is also some gentle, but pleasant, bitterness and plenty of sweetness in the throat, making this an exceptionally balanced tea.

Disclaimer: If you’re expecting plum or stone fruit notes based on the name, those may be slightly detectable at this stage, but will become increasingly obvious as the years go on. 5 or more years of patient storage will be rewarded.

The material for this tea comes from ~40yr “fangyang” (放养/left to grow) trees that are not treated with pesticides, fertilizer or any other intervention outside of picking. This is hands down our preferred type of material as it often lends a richer flavour and texture, but at a more affordable level than gushu or old trees.

Picking period: Pre-April 6

I’ve been a fan of the Plum Beauty series in all of its forms over the past few years. This year’s is by far the most intensely aromatic with strong honeysuckle-like floral notes! Really good. There’s great pungent flavor, with the aroma resonating forever, and the brew has a nice, medium body with a pleasant bitterness and no astringency.
Great continuation of a great series!

This tea has a whole lot going for it. The incredible fragrance would make it accessible to someone who isn’t very experienced with puerh, but there is just enough bitterness to keep a veteran puerh enthusiast interested. On top of that, the tea really has a nice energy to it. It isn’t face-melting but it’s definitely making writing this review take much longer than it should. I got about 1.5 liters of steepings out of 6 grams in a 150ml vessel. That’s really good as I tend to oversteep things. This tea is an excellent value in my opinion. I wish I would have tried the previous years productions but I will certainly stock this one.

Ridiculously strong aroma off the leaves, thick mouthfeel right off the first infusion, and a sweet juicy fruit flavour with the main notes being plum and raisin. This is a through and through daily drinker to me – great taste and feelings that you can enjoy any time without having to think too much about it.

Mengsong seems to produce a lot of good tea. Plum Beauty is one of them, and at a very good price too. It has a complex bouquet, strong and well-integrated bitterness, and a long-lasting aftertaste, all being hallmarks of a quality tea in my opinion. It does, however, upset the stomach a little bit; make sure not to drink it on an empty stomach!

Before the session, the aroma is sweet, floral, and metallic and it explodes into a multitude of directions after the rinse. There are notes of popcorn, stewed beef, green peas, semolina, vanilla ice cream, cedar, and honeysuckle as well as other plants and flowers.

Already the rinse is very flavourful. It has a bitter and savoury profile with a peppery finish – a sign of things to come. The bitterness is continually present throughout the session, but it is well-integrated as I mentioned already and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. Complementing it are various vegetal, floral and tart flavours. I can detect hints of apricot pits, stone fruit skins, jasmine and pine needles.

The tea has a medium to full body with a colloidal mouthfeel and a medium astringency. The aftertaste is crisp and cooling and shows a lot of sweetness alongside the persisting bitterness – the huigan is pretty strong. Despite being floral and sweet, it is not a honey-like aftertaste I’d often associate with teas from He Kai and some other nearby Menghai areas. Instead, there are also notes of malt, rosemary, and salt. Rounding out the experience is a fairly lively and energizing qi that is not overpowering in any way.
