Duo 2021 Fall Dijie & Nanpo Bingdao(ish) Raw Puer

$11.00$49.00

Description

A continuation of sorts from our 2020 Solo Bawai raw puer, this set adds 2 more of the 5 villages that make up Bingdao: Nanpo and Dijie. While Bingdao Laozhai (old village) can be considered the purest Bingdao of them all, it’s also one of the most expensive in Yunnan. These fall teas offer a more accessible experience and arguably a much better value, coming in at a fraction of the cost of Laozhai.

While our 2020 Solo came from the east side of the river that runs through these villages, both of these teas come from the west side, with Bingdao Laozhai sandwiched between them on the north and south sides. The quality is apparent in both teas, with a strong sugary sweetness, fast huigan and a pleasant cooling sensation in the throat.

Overall, the tea from these two villages is quite similar, but with qualities that highlight the difference a few kilometers of separation can make. While both enjoy a pleasant mouthfeel and texture, the Dijie tea offers a slightly more delicate fragrance and relies on its sweet character, while the Nanpo focuses on body with a touch more roughness.

These teas are sold as a pair only, either in the form of 2 x 50g cakes or 2 x 10g samples.

    Brief steeps (5-10 seconds) in 90 Celsius water.
    Liquor is clear amber in color, gaining a more golden hue pass 4th infusion.
    Taste is very light and slightly fruity, followed by a short sweet aftertaste, with Nanpo gives a more pronounced flavor than Dijie.
    Mouthfeel slightly sticky, with no astringency nor bitterness, and a slight cooling feel down the throat.
    Wet leaves are olive green with a yellowish hue, giving off a mild scent of stone fruits, more so with Nanpo than Dijie.
    The flavor intensity starts to mellow down by the 5th infusion, thus best to do a longer steep from here onwards.
    A longer steep (1 minute) does not give much of difference in flavor difference apart from a hint of astringency to the palate for both, and still no bitterness.

    Funny horizontal tea tasting. I loved the texture and the mouth activation.
    //Smell:
    Dijie– Delicate and smooth floral fragrance, sweet pastries, hay, maple syrup waffles, fresh strawberries, lemon water, fruit sugar
    Nanpo– Tart, sugary, wet hay, wet rock, spice herbaceous, candied zest, freshness
    //Texture:
    Dijie– Smooth and soft, medium to thick texture (get thicker as we brew), silky
    Nanpo—Less refined than the Dijie, thicker, creamier, lasts long in the mouth
    //Taste:
    Dijie—Hay, herbaceous (while being sweet), astringent like an apple than make your saliva disappear when you eat it
    Nanpo—Mineral, astringent, herbaceous, more in texture than taste, strong
    //Body sensation:
    Heartrate that resonate in every part of the body, mind awake, nice joyful energy
