Description

While this tuo (nest shaped) raw puer perhaps hasn’t grown up as fast as some other raw puers of the same age, it holds its own with a vegetal, sweet flavour that has had its edges smoothed out. This shape tends to age a bit slower than cakes or bricks, but that’s not always a bad thing. This is an excellent tea to enjoy now for an exceptionally drinkable raw puer experience, but is also on track to become a fine aged tea.

This tea comes from a private collection, stored in Kunming by one owner since 2007. This Feng Huang tuo recipe puer was originally produced by the Lin Shi factory in Dali and shows great promise for additional storage.

Each tuo is 100g in size and made from Lincang region material.

    Excellent value, nice balance of flavors and impressive complexity for price. Lots of tannins but balanced by rich flavor and caramel-thick mouthfeel. 回甘 (sweet finish) is very persistent.

    Extremely aromatic tea that fills the entire room. First few infusions are bright, but this changes into a deep, dark, woodsy taste. It has a very long lasting aftertaste that sticks in the back of your throat. Stone fruit, caramel, and toast were my main notes.

    This is an extremely tannic and astringent puer, even brewed as nothing more than a rinse. It’s very densely packed, which may help explain how young it still seems. It has a hazy appearance, which possibly is related to the intense bitterness. However, it has some nice toasty caramel notes that come out in later infusions to complement the camphor. It’s not my favorite puer, but worth trying at a very reasonable price. It could probably be aged well and can be drank now with very quick rinses.

    Taste is mainly vegetal with distant smoke and camphor cooling, a bit of dried apricots and spices, and some returning sweetness.
    Bitterness and astringency are present but are well balanced and rounded by age.
    Speaking of which 11 years in dry Kunming storage and tuo shape combined didn’t allowed this tea to flourish in aging department (at least for my liking) and while there is no rough edges in taste or mouthfeel it is still very green and not really what I would call semi aged yet.
    Nonetheless it’s very enjoyable tea and quite departure to what I usually drink, great replacement to my 2010 Xiaguan Jia Ji tuo that I was drinking on on rare occasions when I was looking for camphor and smoke in PuErh.

    This tuo is firmly pressed so I had a bit of difficulty to extract leaves without breaking them. The dry leaves smell reminded me clean (and wet) clothes. Once rinsed the smell moves to an old wooden barn! Very light and smooth liquor. Generous coating of the tongue. I loved the vegetal and fresh taste!

    This tea could definitely use more age, but I don’t think I have the storage to do it justice. I drank through my whole tuo over the course of a year or so and really enjoyed it, but I had to be in the mood for its character for the session to not exhaust my palette. Crazy value and I might commit to another tuo one of these days.
