Goddess Roast 2013 Tieguanyin Oolong

$4.00$59.00

Description

We discovered this tea during a recent trip to Fujian, and while it was not the way we expected to offer our first Tieguanyin, sometimes you have to go off script. In fact, it’s probably best to just throw away the expectations all together.

This 2013 spring Tieguanyin has undergone multiple traditional charcoal roasts since, as well as controlled storage to encourage further oxidization, bringing it to its current state. The producer specifically paid attention to the processing and storage details to reach the desired results.

Almost a decade later, this tea has transformed into what we can only really describe as tea wanting to be coffee. Or perhaps coffee trying to be tea? Either way you order it, this tea has a noticeable coffee-like aroma, milky mouthfeel and unique fragrance.

Shou puer is typically cited as the most coffee-like tea, and recommended to coffee lovers trying to join the winning team. And while shou is not a bad place to start, we feel this Tieguanyin offers a dynamic experience that includes more roasted notes borrowed from coffee.

The aging on this tea has been wonderful. The leaves are dark black, I expected it to have a super strong roast flavor, but it’s much more balanced tea. I also love to sip it while roasting coffee, the aroma holds up nicely. Great tea!

An extremely pleasant tea, notes of coffee and toasted cocoa bean are perceived until reaching greater peaks of complexity with notes of hazelnut, empyreumatic and old playing cards. The sip is of medium thickness, with notes of milk chocolate and hazelnuts, excellent sweetness and a slight acidity which, combined with the aromas of roasting, recalls the nuances of a good espresso. A great overall experience and a good example of an aged TGY.

Good evening tea. Relaxing and comforting
//Smell: Cocoa powder, coffee bean coated with dark chocolate, caramelized pastries, roasted nuts, sweet milk
//Texture: Slow mouth coating up to the cheeks, creamy and thick texture
//Taste: Chocolate pastries, roasted nuts, coffee bean coated with dark chocolate, hot chocolate
//Body sensation: Weight behind the eyes, body heat, slow reactions, calm, serenity

A wonderful find, It smells like almost-burnt marshmallows and charcoal, but it tastes so much like smore’s! An absolute delight! If brewing gongfu, from my experience the 7th or 8th brew is perhaps the most Tieguanyin-like; roasty-toasty, caremely, chocolatey – I cannot recommend this any more highly.

What a treat, the dark roast has settled over the years into a delicious dessert like sip. Heavy aroma of coffee, chocolate, caramel, hazelnuts, wood, mineral, all translate into the cup. and a juicy mouth feel with long lasting sweet roast aftertaste. Relaxed warming chaqi. Infusion 3 was the boldest and I quickly increased the steep time. I am pleased to find inside the sealed tin the tea is individually packed into 8g servings.

Tastes of cocoa powder, marshmallows, and carbon. But none as strong as I expected.

Usually I don’t like excess packaging, but the individual 8g packets make this perfect for hassle free brewing at the office.

Very strong aroma. If you like coffee like stuff you would probably like this. Its not as concentrated as an expresso but close enough for a tea i guess.

The roast is extremely strong, yet somehow not unbalanced at all. There’s a caramel undertone to it that is delicious, and a lingering warmth and roasty aftertaste. I’m about to order some more!

A lot more roast than I’ve ever had, especially on the initial aroma, though I should have expected it.
The first couple steeps are powerfully smokey and umami – almost meaty. Pretty quickly reduces and comes across like a lightly smoked beer. Middle and later steeps have a more noticeable sweetness and chocolate flavor as others noted. I also get some spices (maybe clove?). I remember a sort of mild “head high” feeling which was new to me but interesting and pleasant.
Definitely complex and I would start with a small amount if new to this type of tea lol

On the nose you just get this array of aromas like a dried fruit and nuts trail mix, diner coffee (but in the best way imaginable- I love this smell), caramel, and all of that is backed by a beautifully balanced roast. Every single aroma transfers to the cup alongside cocoa and woody notes. I love this tea and im absolutely kicking myself for only ordering a sample.
