Hulk Spring 2026 Spring Simao Green Tea

Price range: $6.25 through $46.00

Description

Puer might be the most well-known tea coming out of Yunnan these days, but that wasn’t always the case. Before puer’s popularity was renewed in the 2000s, the most commonly enjoyed tea locally, was green tea, usually from Simao. Even today, it’s more likely than not that the security guard, bus driver, police officer or store employee you’d encounter in Kunming still just threw some local green tea in their thermos to get them through the day.

History aside, this green tea has a dense flavour, lasting fragrance and slight astringency. This tea uses first flush material, which emphasizes the sweetness and gives it a more delicate fragrance, with some vegetal and nutty notes. Overall, it makes for an excellent budget green tea that produces a pleasant and uncomplicated experience.

For one of us, this tea represents a taste of childhood, growing up drinking dad’s thermos-brewed green tea. While this tea might not have the same cache as many puer, nor be something you want to store away for ageing, it’s just as representative of the taste of Yunnan.

We recommend brewing this tea with 85-90c water (boiling works too) in a glass gongdaobei/pitcher and using a smaller amount of tea than you would for gongfu brewing. Something around 1 gram to 30ml of water should be good, but feel free to adjust this depending on taste (too bitter, use less tea; if too weak, use more). Brew the first infusion for around 1 minute, then keep topping up the pitcher as you please.

Deep flavours have been commanding since the first year Hulk arrived. For this 2026 offering, I wonder if the beast is showing a hint of taming. The sweetness and bright notes are more apparent this year, with the finish a bit less brash. While I’m all for that brash powerhouse of previous years, this 2026 has more playfulness creeping in around the familiar bold character.
All depends on how you brew, but this Hulk seems easier to bring out both a grace and an aggression. And if you’re into the more vegetal qualities, I get asparagus and courgette/zucchini notes emerging after the first couple of infusions.

Definitely the tea to choose for a simple, enjoyable moment! The way the leaves open is also very satisfying to watch.
// Smell: Sweet, juicy corn with butter and nori, almonds soaked in tamari sauce.
// Texture: Tingling on the palate and teeth, a sticky and creamy texture, with a cooling sensation as it fades across the palate.
// Taste: Buttery corn broth, vegetal notes, roasted nuts, steamed asparagus, roasted nori.
// Body sensation: Vanished saliva, thick coating on the palate, slightly quicker heartbeat, stillness.

Really solid daily drink in a mug for me. It has some similarities with Full of Beans but it’s slightly less sweet and has more brightness and a grapefruit peel zing at the end. The leaves are nice and big and it’s easy to “navigate” so that they don’t get in the mouth when brewed and drank straight from the mug.
