Great Expectations 2023 Pasha Raw Puer

$9.50$338.00

Description

Made from Pasha qiaomu material growing in an excellent environment with minimal human interference, this tea has Menghai character written all over it. This year’s tea again offers nice bitterness that is accompanied by gentle floral quality, but with an added fruitiness compared to the previous pressing. The huigan (returning sweetness) is strong, with the fragrance lingering well after you’ve taken a sip.

As a region, Pasha is often noted for its proximity to Laobanzhang and distinguished as having 70% of the character, with the remaining 30% being Bingdao. While this formula is a bit gimmicky and silly, there’s something to it, as this tea manages to strike a nice balance between an aggressive and dense flavour, and an engaging fragrance.

While even top tier puers can exhibit some dramatic ups and downs in their first year, our experience with this tea since pressing it a year prior has been extremely consistent, performing well each time we brewed it. So far, it’s lived up to its name, so our expectations are maintained for this tea.

Picking period: March 27-April 7

Many of our samples for spring 2023 are in dragon ball form. While these balls will perform the same as the cake, they can be slightly trickier to brew. Here’s how we do it:

This one’s a lot like OGNaka but with an extra kick of bitterness. It’s super sweet and that sweetness hangs around for a while. Smells great in the mouth, not so much in the nose. Overall, really pleasant.

A “lesser” version of Gentle Giant with a great Pasha profile but having the bitterness & astringency dialled down a notch. An excellent drink that should satisfy young sheng lovers.

Perfect liqueur to clear your head and let your mind wander
//Smell : Very fruity (fresh strawberries), zesty, tart fruit candy, vivid and intense tropical notes, pineapple/kiwi/mango sorbet, old leather
//Texture: Tingling on the tip of the tongue, the liquor goes straight in the back of the mouth and around the bottom teeth, thick and creamy texture
//Taste : Library, leather, spicy/sweet combo, herbaceous, hot day at the farm, clean clothes drying outside
//Body sensation: Vision slower then the head movement, shaky hands, mental energy, joy

Starts with gentle mouthfeel, floral notes, and a drying bitterness that transitions to a sweet huigan that sits deep in the throat. Some notes of dry wood that ground this tea similar that which comes from quality ageing; both in taste and (especially) in smell. The floral notes transition to honeysuckle in middle steeps, then to tropical fruits in later steeps. The only reason I can’t give it 5 stars is because it left the back of my throat VERY dry at the end of the session.

Ready to drink now. I’m not a huge fun of young shengs generally, but this is delicious now and I’m sure will continue to age well. It has some up-front bitterness, but almost no astringency. It is sweet and floral and a slightly reminiscent of Dragonwell kind of vegetal quality. The finish is lingeringly sweet and not overly mouth-drying. Still making my way through the ’23-’24 sheng samples, but this is my favorite so far by a wide margin.
