KAPOW 2021 Menghai Shou Puer

For those who like a thick shou with plenty of meat on the bones, then this tea is for you. This tea is thick and dense in both flavour and mouthfeel, with even a touch of residual bitterness to make things interesting. There is a slight woodiness in the flavour, which is balanced by a nice huigan and slight sweetness.

It bears worth repeating that this tea is seriously thick, brewing up into soy sauce consistency. Even when brewing with a light hand, this tea comes in full force.

We sample dozens of different shou productions and piles throughout the year, but this particular one stands out amongst the rest. Even though bold in just about every way, it still manages to have a clean taste without any notable fermentation flavour or off note. As far as value puer goes, this is as close to ideal as we’ve seen yet.

This is probably the most ‘inky’ shou I’ve had – from steep number one it’s totally opaque, and texture-wise it’s thick, soft, and very coating. A bitterness punches in from the first infusion, gradually fading into warm wood and mixed earth, spiced, almost medicinal roots, and a backing, deep sweetness that starts out subtle and becomes more apparent in the breath out. I feel some sort of heady qi here as well. This shou definitely provides an engaging session.

I had my doubts. I felt like the description of this tea, at an everyman’s price point, might let me down. Marketing!! Damn you!! You beautiful, clever, sometimes hamfisted, sometimes exaggerated expression of culture, art, and product information!!! Who the fuck do you think you are to not give me exactly what I want and expect?!? Haha! Some people’s controlling expectation of what constitutes acceptable tea labeling never fails to crack me up. Anyway I really liked this marketing, now what about the damn tea??!

DARK leaves in this cake, pungent! It’s a great sign! I’m getting my hopes up!! Strong scent! Smell of wet leaves is chocolate rice cereal. The first sip made me literally say “WOW!”! It’s hard to believe a shu in this price range is this thick. This tea’ got TEETH.

Burly. Thick. Strongbad!!! but good! Sweet in the middle, bitter on the edges. A HEAVY HITTER. Chocolate notes over graham cracker. Not milk chocolate but not baking chocolate either. It’s hard to believe a tea could pack in this much value. Faith in humanitea, restored! Pay for the tea, get the existential healing for free.

I don’t love this tea, but it does punch above it’s price point. Thick, thick texture with some interesting woody and medicinal qualities. For my palate this is a bitter shou. By reducing the dose, water temperature, and making the steeps very short, I was able to find a balance that tempers the edge while letting the weight shine. Ymmv, I gravitate toward sweet, buddy shou.

Perfect tea for when your attention is elsewhere, uni-taste.
//Smell : Wet earthy trail, dead fallen leafs on the ground, sweet dessert (cold), fireplace after a rain, cranberry, outdoor freshness
//Texture: Sticky/creamy/thick texture, tingling on the palate and the front part of the mouth, weight in the cheeks
//Taste : Earthy, wet rock, heavily mineral, cold like a draft from a window in winter
//Body sensation: Menthol, great energy, increased heartrate, joy, reconnaissance, awake, salivation

“Brewing up to soy sauce consistency” is a spot on description. Along with the sticky sweetness and congee flavor, there is a light camphor note. Be forewarned that this cake is COMPACT and is a little tougher to break up that some of the other shou cakes available.
