Description
This tea is a great introduction to Laomane for those who are bitter-curious. Made from huangpian (large yellow leaves) sorted out from our Bitter End raw puer, this tea offers some pleasant bitterness and enjoyable fragrance, but in a smoother, easier to accept package.
As with each of our huangpian teas for 2022, $5 from the sale of each cake will go towards supporting various causes, with this tea’s portion supporting Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). CMHA provides advocacy, programs and resources that help to prevent mental health problems and illnesses, support recovery and resilience, and enable all Canadians to flourish and thrive. As expected with a Laoman’e sheng, the texture is really soft and smooth, but the flavor notes are a bit surprising. Lots and lots of lime zest, a bit of mint and smoke, pretty brothy – it honestly reminds me of phở. Bitterness and astringency creep in a couple steeps in, but of course it’s an enjoyable sensation along with some energetic cha qi. The lime-orange citrus punches the corners of the mouth in bright flashes. If you’re a bitter head like me, this huangpian cake will definitely provide a quality session.

This seems like a good one judging by this first session! Wet leaves have a deep, earthy and leathery scent. Very smooth overall experience for a huang pian. Lacking any unpleasant acidity or sourness (starting to see a pattern here: is it mostly old tree huang pian that has that?). Soup has a nice soft texture and leaves a lasting sweet aftertaste and mild bitterness in the mouth. Not a very complex tea, rather toned down overall but the tea feels very substantial still. One of the better huang pian I’ve had. I can’t comment on the body feel based on this session, but if it has a good body feel I could easily see myself tonging this.

This is my favourite of the huang pian selection this year. The Laomane steeps up for ages, delivering sweetness and bitterness in a tangy combo of insane beauty. Aaaaand, I totally forgot to buy a whole cake in my latest order. Such an oversight, so maybe I’ll buy my first ever tong instead as my next order…Seriously, this tea represents such good value, taste, and lengthy sessions, that I’m tempted to totally tong up!

I like it, but there was no “crush”
//Smell : pastry sugariness, broth, caramelized, mint lip balm, comfort food, fall leaves on the ground, wet soil, incense
//Texture: Tingling on the tip of the tongue, cheeks get excited when the liquor hits them, thick, generous mouth coating
//Taste : Honeycomb cereals, pepper, astringent, broth, baked cake, hay, celery salt
//Body sensation: laughing cheeks, heat production, nice energy/mood

This huangpian keeps to present most of Lao-man-e character, thick and brothy texture with briskness and zingy aftertaste. The undertone is of fresh wood like pencil shavings and of wood resins and gums which resembles the smoke from classic chinese scent sticks we routinely offer to our ancestors. This batch also has very strong downward force which clears my tummy, calms my mind down and I am more happy right off the bat just by the third steeping.
