Description
This tasting set comprises of 4 dragon balls made of single origin mountain teas from different (mostly) regions and serves to demonstrate a few of the common traits found in raw puer.
For more of your favourite tea from the set, 200g cakes are also sold individually.
Of course, the following characteristics far from create an exhaustive list. Are these teas the singular most typical examples of each trait? Of course not. They are hopefully noticeable relative to each other and relative to most other puers, but it would be a virtually impossible task to discover the most extreme of any characteristic.
The teas are:
Fragrant (Xiang) – This mixed picking (young and old tree) material exhibits the upfront and highly noticeable fragrance that good Jingmai tea is known for. In some cases, the notes of the fragrance are more definable, such as an “orchid fragrance” for Jingmai.
Soft (Rou) – This tea has a softer texture that rolls in the mouth. This trait is often common with older tree material, but also a lot of Yiwu region teas, such as this one.
Bitter (Ku) – While some Bulang region teas can exhibit an overwhelming and uncomfortable amount of bitterness, this mixed picking tea was intentionally chosen for its less extreme properties. While it is more bitter and arguably rougher than the others in this set, it is still drinkable and enjoyable without the need for years of storage.
Sweet (Tian) – A self-explanatory trait. A puer’s sweetness can be described in many ways, whether it’s the soup and immediate taste, a sugar vs honey sweetness, sweetness in the throat or a lasting huigan. Many regions have their own version of sweet, but we feel this mixed picking material from Guafengzhai area is particularly suitable.
How do these teas fit your idea of what they should be? Overlap is inevitable and tastes are subjective, but we encourage you to examine the noticeable differences and where these particular teas fall on your own scale of reference.

I don’t like dragon balls but I’ve bought a great cake through this tasting set and I imagine others will as well, as I’ve only disliked one of these teas..

Nice little set of some autumn raw pu’er that exemplifies the range that ‘autumn character’ can take in the flavor and aroma of raw pu’er. If you’ve never tried autumn sheng but have tried spring sheng, I think this is a great tasting set to explore the general ‘autumn character.’ This also obviously focuses on different dimensions of character (ku, tian, rou, xiang), but there are plenty more to explore between these teas, as mentioned in the description. The ‘rou’ in particular shows the influence of processing on the overall character of the tea, with a more oxidized leaves leading to a very specific aroma and mouthfeel. The ‘xiang’ is indeed aromatic, but in a refined subtle way, and with a lower oxidation contrasts against the ‘rou’ well. The ‘tian’ was also similar in this way, though unique in its aroma and flavor with, indeed, a sweeter flavor. The ‘ku’ tea was my favorite of the bunch by a long shot with a pleasant bitterness supported by a mild sweetness, active mouthfeel (tingling!) and a powerful, robust, and complex aroma that I could have fooled been fooled into believing was a fresh 2018 Spring production. Definitely had to order a cake of the ‘ku’ tea after that session.

Rou: Mineral wet rocks – thin to medium texture – Great experience
Xian: Wet and clean clothes – Salty air – Old leather bag – Medium texture
Tian: Floral – clean – honey sweetness – velvety texture – Comforting session
Ku: Hay and farm smell – Thick texture – Generoux mouth coating – Gentle astringency

What a great tasting set! It’s so convenient to brew! I was surprised that I enjoyed all the flavors. I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the Bitter Ku tea, but it was actually very enjoyable.

I’ve only been drinking Puer for about a year, so I love tasting sets and samples because they give me a nice range so I can figure out what I like. The only problem with this set is that it didn’t help me narrow down my taste sine I liked all of them. I did enjoy the range of experiences this set provided though.

This set is a really good buy if you are looking at finding and learning more about specific flavors in something as complex as puerhs. This is great for both a beginner as well as someone who is more experienced! All the teas are quite good, my favorite being the bitter Ku
