Not a year goes by that we don’t love this tea. From some of the old-ass trees in Manlong village, Hekai, where trees range from 100 to 800+ years old and semi-wild pigs and chickens roam freely, this is one of those teas that keeps earning its place in the lineup. Treatment of the trees is also tightly controlled by the local government, meaning no use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizer or over-picking.

Sitting just a few kilometers from several famous neighbours (Banzhang villages), Hekai shares much of the regional character, including a kuwei (pleasant bitterness), thick soup, and strong energy, but in a more balanced and accessible package. The bitterness is less brash than tea from further south, leaving more room for the fragrance and a juicy huigan that lingers.

The soup is thick and mouth-coating, developing well from brew to brew. We recommend this tea for focused sessions, not because it demands it, but because it rewards it.
