Description
Originally intended to be a maocha-only offering, this certified organic Simao raw puer impressed us so much that we had to press it into cakes.
For a tea that can easily fit into any budget, it has a lot to offer. The fragrance and soup teeters between savoury and sweet, with an excellent huigan persisting at the end. With notes of fruit and a gentle kuwei (pleasant bitterness), this tea covers an impressive amount of ground.
Whether you enjoyed our initial loose offering or are yet to try it, this tea is sure to impress.

Many of our samples for spring 2025 are in dragon ball form. While these balls will perform the same as the cake, they can be slightly trickier to brew. Here’s how we do it:

Got a few dragon balls of this,
hints of soybeans and fresh green tea on the nose.
a flash of bitterness and then simple sugar sweetness,
simple and clean.

Dragon ball version
The dry leaf smells like a soup of savoury spring peas and green tea. The taste follows much the same, feeling like a green tea for a first few steeps and then turning thicker with a tamed bittersweet edge. I slightly oversteeped it at times in a 100ml gaiwan and it does get more bitter, but it’s still restrained enough to be enjoyable. The sweetness is present from the sipping to resting between the steeps and it lingers quite a bit. The taste is on the simpler side but it’s quite rich. By the time I was done with it, the throat was sticky and sweet, prolonging the savoring. Great daily drink for a young raw pu erh.

It was really fun to do a horizontal comparison between the loose version and the dragon ball. In the end, they eventually tend to meet.
// Smell: Ball – Very subtle, cardboard box, herbaceous, hay
Mao – Animal humidity, herbaceous, small farm with animals and hay on the ground, wet rock, floral freshness
// Texture: Ball – Thick texture, tingling in the cheeks and on the palate, evaporating cool sensation
Mao – Even thicker texture, heavy liquor, strong teeth coating, cool tingling on the gums and lips
// Taste: Ball – Small library, humid hay, spiced? wet rock, heaviness of a super hot summer day
Mao – Additional floral notes, fresher and lighter > like a pleasant breeze on a hot summer day
// Body sensation: Vanished saliva, eyes awake, very fast heartbeat, intense heat production, smiling cheeks, positivity, motivation

Giving 5 stars considering the price. I got the cake after trying the dragon balls. Lightly vegetal, good minerality and bite, simple but engaging daily drinker.
