We should clarify that tea can’t technically be called puer according to the official definition, due the maocha’s origins just over the border in Myanmar. For all intents and purposes, we will consider this a “puer” though, as the processing, tree varietal and results remain the same. After all, trees don’t care about imaginary lines. In many cases, maocha from Myanmar or Laos that is smuggled over the border often ends up in plenty of “puer” cakes as it is.

This tea is as unique in character as it is in origins. There is a strong vegetal flavour that is accompanied by a pleasant sweetness in terms of both flavour and huigan. The early steeps also display a slight woodsy and nutty flavour that creeps in. This woodsy scent and a mineral taste take over more in subsequent steeps, accompanied by a strong huigan and lingering scent in the throat. This tea is a must-try for any puer lover seeking something out of the ordinary.

We’re very happy to be able to offer a uniquely different tea from a non-traditional region for puer-style tea. Each of these 7 gram dragon balls have been rolled in a way that allows them to open up very quickly. We recommend using a longer rinse (~20 seconds) to help it open up. After that, the first and second brews should already be quite flavourful.

This tea is available in packs of 2, 5 or 10 dragon balls.

I love these. I’m really intrigued by “border teas” and this Myanmar raw tea is excellent. My experience with Myanmar in the past was a bit rough, but this tea is very clean and very well processed; no smoky notes, just nice pungent raw tea. The material is of excellent quality with delicate handling, which is obvious when the leaves open up. Large leaf, big bud material that has a distinct character. The aromatics have classic sheng pungency with nutty and woody notes mentioned in the vendor description. It delivers a thick brew with sweetness, pleasant bitterness, and lasting retronasal aroma and aftertaste.
I save these for “big sessions” when I’m either wanting to drink a bunch of tea, or I’m sharing. I use a larger gaiwan (~130mL) than I typically would due (~100mL) to the 7g size so the leaves can really open up, but I also know some people leaf up harder than me.
If “dragon balls” aren’t typically your thing due to how long the tea takes to open up, this is a great exception. It pops open pretty quickly, even faster if you put a little effort into gently giving it a hand.

I loved this hairy dragon ball and the fact that there’s no need of breaking it before the infusion. I experimented a long rinse of 20 seconds and the tea started to open up as suggested. The leaves have a comforting smell of leather and meadow flowers. Soft and velvety mouthfeel. Honeylike mouthcoating which is really pleasant. A real delight. I enjoyed every minutes!

Sweet floral and dry grass and hay aroma, turning to warm apple sauce once wet. A delicious Yiwu-like sweetness, if that even really exists, with notes of light raw honey, salted caramel, fresh honeysuckle and some hints of papaya along with the tannic bitterness of white grape skins and seeds. Very aromatic and floral, reminiscent of rose-water with hints of lemon zest that lasts long into the aftertaste. The body is dense and oily while the mouthfeel is soft and inviting. I am drinking this before breakfast on an empty stomach and no negative body sensations arise. In fact, I feel a good sense of energy from the tea. It seems to make me more wakeful and energetic beyond just caffeine. I did not expect to enjoy this sheng as much as I did, and wish I had not ignored it for so long since it is beautifully complex and rewards attention while also being very easy to drink mindlessly. Highly recommended. Brewed in hongni yixing, 7.5g ball to 100ml of boiling water.
