Description

A fantastic fall sheng, this tea could also be known as bargain Bingdao. Or maybe passed off as legit Bingdao Laozhai under other guises… But here at Bitterleaf, we won’t do you like that.

This tea comes from Bingdao Bawai, which is one of the 5 villages that make up Bingdao area. Our original intention was to provide a cake from each of these 5 villages, however, this fall’s weather had different plans, heavily reducing production and availability for 3 of the villages.

While Laozhai (old village) is the one that everybody wants and consequently the one that commands top dollar, tea from this village is still excellent, and most definitely a better value than Laozhai material.

This tea is highly fragrant, with the characteristic Bingdao honey-sweetness that all the kids all go for these days. There is also a good kick to it when pushed, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a good value mid-range sheng.

A really fantastic young sheng. Very smooth mouthfeel, with a rich sweetness and lots of minty huigan. Goes for many steeps as well. This one is a little more pricier than I usually go for but it’s definitely very worth it.

Brief steeps (few seconds) in 90 Celsius water.
Liquor is very clear and pale yellow in color.
Taste is surprisingly non-intrusive for a very young sheng puerh.
It is smooth and fruity with a sweet aftertaste, almost honey-ish and pear-like.
Mouthfeel is somewhat sticky with a slight cooling sensation in the throat, and with an absence of astringency and bitterness.
Wet leaves are olive green in hue and give off a soft aroma of minty sugared green stone fruit.
If the flavor profile is the way it is now, I imagine this would taste awesome when aged longer.
Flavor mellows down by the 5th/6th infusion, yet no bitterness with a longer steep (1 minute).

Buttery, herbaceous, vegetal, boiled asparagus, honeyed – -there’s plenty to taste in the little cake. I don’t know about you but after each sessions the surrounding noises seamed louder!?
