If our regular Bitter End Lao Man E is a good example of the local “sweet” varietal tea, then this is undoubtedly the bitter varietal. This tea starts out with a noticeably dominant bitter taste, and while the bitter taste carries on, there are also complex levels of flavour on display before finishing with a gentle huigan.

This tea is made from quality old tree material and can be quite enjoyable for many, assuming you don’t have any aversion to bitterness (and if that’s the case, let us help you get where you were going).

We highly recommend this tea for the bi(tter)-curious as a comparison between our Lao Man E “sweet” varietal and huang pian versions.

This tea was initially only offered in 10g maocha form, as we initially intend to offer it for the experience and educational aspects. We have caved to requests though, and those of you whose life is too sweet can now purchase 50g of Xtra Bitter as well. If this is a tea you could see yourself buying a cake of, please let us know as your feedback is welcome and could easily influence our decision to press or not in future seasons.

Very powerful PuErh and understandably not for everyone, but also very rewarding one and great choice for people that are ready to embrace bitterness.

The Bitter End Xtra… This is my favorite offering from Bitterleaf.

I’ll start by saying that this tea isn’t for everyone. If you shy away from sheng that’s more on the bitter side… Well that name is no joke, this might not end up your favorite sheng.

I happen to love young bitter sheng puerh. Especially Lao Man E. While this is definitely a bitter tea, you’re immediately rewarded with an intense sweetness like no other. On top of that, this tea steeps for ever. I’ve had sessions at least twenty steeps long, and probably could have gone longer.

When I drink Lao Man E I have a mental image of an ancient tranquil forest. Large Moss covered rocks, tall still trees, and the soft trickle of running water. A quiet strength.

No other area makes me feel this way. I like this tea so much I purchased one hundred grams to put in a jar and enjoy over time, hoping that Bitterleaf can find an equal offering this year.

I did say this tea isn’t for everyone. Still, I can’t help but recommend this tea to everyone. At least get ten grams and see if you like it. You might be pleasantly surprised.

This is the most bitter tea I’ve had, and I hunt down bitter teas.. I’ve had both amazing and horrible experiences with it depending on how well I feel. . bought a larger amount for blending since it’s so powerful.
