Legacy 2018 Ripe Puer

Price range: $4.00 through $125.00

Description

From the same farmer as our Obsession sheng puer, this tea highlights his ability to craft an excellent shou as well. With a clean taste, minimal fermentation flavour and a smooth texture, this tea goes beyond the standard hallmarks of a quality shou with a rich, nutty flavour and full mouthfeel.

Because even small-batch shou requires a considerable amount of material, this Menghai dominant blend also includes material from Jinggu and Lincang, which likely contributes a unique fragrance compared to your standard Menghai productions.

Although we were in search of spring sheng at the time when we discovered this farmer, we were equally impressed with his shou production set up. Our preference for shou productions tends to push us towards larger factories with tighter hygiene practices, clean fermentation and consistent oversight.

However, as a former technician specializing in shou puer for a large factory in Simao, he maintains those standards for his own small batch productions in Jinggu – an uncommon quality for many small scale shou setups.

Teas like this don’t shou up often. Considering this tea could easily hold its own with teas double the price and up, this is a no brainer for all ripe puer lovers.

Available in 5 different wrapper designs, tong purchases will receive one of each, otherwise the design will be random.

There’s something on the scent of this one. It’s a solid shou but theres something lurking in it that I haven’t found in others that makes it really unique. Not in a large in your face way but the kind that keeps you craving it. Half way to cream, half way to caramel, half way to that weird dance of flaviurs under cola. Not close to any of them but it reminds me of them all.

Aside from the je ne sais quoi qualities the tea is clean, brews like ink, carves its flavour into my tongue and seems to hold a good couple of steeps in it.

Loved this, especially at this price point. Drink this once every 3 days aprox. This tea just delivers and never misses. Dont think this tea offers too much in terms of flavor, but it’s for sure an excellent daily option.

Very clean and no post fermentation aroma. Texture is very creamy, sweet, and woody. The viscosity of this ripe is the highlight! Definitely recommend for the price.

Fun zesty touch for a refreshing twist to this comforting liquor. Pleasing contrast, delectable tea!
//Smell: Wet dead leaves, cold wind, earthy trail, butterscotch pudding, roasted nuts, wet rock, rip fruits, floral
//Texture: Tingling on the tip of the tongue, super silky/creamy/oily/thick texture, weight on the back teeth
//Taste: Cream of mushroom (and dead leaves) soup, spicy, wet rock, broth
//Body sensation: Thick saliva, stable heart-rate, desire to take my time in silence

A pleasant funk on the nose, a deep inky mahogany liquor, yet a very clean drinking puer with simple dry wood and wet forest floor notes. Rounding up to 4 stars considering the price.

I can’t get enough of this tea. I had gone through two cakes like nothing. Smooth, sweet, plain, simple, woody, clean, spring water, forgiving….dates, cherry, dried figs…I can’t get enough words to pinpoint it, It is my primary daily drinker. I keep trying to figure it out but what I’ve come to is that I just feel good drinking it and enjoy this tea. I feel like this To quote Ursula Le Guin’s version of the Tao:
“Hold fast to the great thought and all the world will come to you, harmless, peaceable, serene.
Walking around, we stop for music, for food.
But if you taste the Way it’s flat, insipid.
It looks like nothing much, it sounds like nothing much.
And yet you can’t get enough of it.”

A desert-like tea with very clean taste for ripe puerh. The first few steeps remind me of biscuts with hints of butter/vegetable shortening and caramelized sugar. The finish gives impression of skimmed milk with sweetness in the throat that lingers.

The mouthfeel is very smooth and even oily/buttery when letting it cool down a bit. After a few cups the impression starts shifting towards gingerbread cookies with some peppery and dry wood notes.

Taking a break from this tea brings a cooling and wet sensation in the throat.
