Moon Shadow Gaiwan

We’re making two of our favourite gaiwans available, with some reluctance. This pre-covid era series was always one of our favourites to update. With the arrival of each new batch we always held onto our favourite 5-10 gaiwans. This left us with a fairly decent collection of her work.

However, this collection is also a bit excessive. We don’t need nor can use all of these gaiwans, so we’ve decided to periodically let a few go.

These come from one of our favourite artists in Jingdezhen, who sadly is no longer with us. This style of gaiwan was imitated throughout Jingdezhen for a while, but never with the same care or detail that Xingyin put into her work. Her use of the JDZ public kiln also injected some spontaneity, as the results of each batch was influenced by the other pieces they shared the kiln with.

It’s bittersweet to let them go, but they’ll be happier being used regularly in a new home.

Each of these gaiwans was produced by the same artist as our other moon-series gaiwans in Jingdezhen, and feature varying degrees of red, purple and smoky highlights.

While these gaiwans retain the same balanced feel in the hands and shape, they are cosmetically different. Instead of using rough clay as previously done, this batch of gaiwans is made from a finer white clay (瓷), more similar to porcelain. This results in a smoother overall appearance without any iron spots or carbon trappings.
