Bouquet 2023 Spring Dancong Oolong Huangpian

Made from the sorted Huangpian (yellow leaves) of higher end Dancong, this tea is perfect for when you want Dancong on a budget, or just prefer a more casual experience.

Just as with puer, the older Dancong leaves are sorted out after the initial roast. This is partly due the yellower and stiffer appearance, but also as they tend to have a more subdued flavour, although with more sweetness.

A blend of various varietals, this tea offers up a honey-sweet, roasty flavour. Based on how it brews, we suspect there could be a good amount of Milan in there.

While they call this sorted tea “lao cha tou” in Chaozhou, it’s not the same as puer lao cha tou, which is a byproduct of shou puer production. This tea is instead similar to puer’s huangpian. And just like puer huangpian, this tea offers the same value and balance of cost and quality, with an overall less complex character, but high sweetness, smooth taste, and gentle minerality.

As these sorted leaves tend to only be available in smaller quantities, this tea is actually a blend of several varietals. This means it won’t reflect the specific characters of any one varietal, but is much more dynamic than it should be.

Please note that the 250g size does not include a tin.

We recommend brewing this tea using Chaozhou style gongfu brewing. Here’s how it’s done:

For something different, you can also try cold brewing:

    OK Dancong. Misses depth
//Smell: Toasted bread with butter, dried flowers, fruit zest, tartness of cranberries, nice minerality, BBQ roasted fruits, cold coffee
//Texture: Warm on the palate, thick coating on the cheeks, medium to thick general texture, sharp, bitterness
//Taste: Heavy robust flower smell, wet rocks, dry roast, smooth honey
//Body sensation: Increased heartbeat, body heat, eye awake

Um excelente chá que carrega notas florais, com um toque de mineralidade e uma torra perceptível. É um pouco menos floral do que o do ano passado, mas ainda delicioso, com uma torra mais acentuada que amplia a percepção da mineralidade e da torra no chá

This tea is very light, floral, sweet and smooth – indicative of higher-grade sorting, with a touch of minerality and a trace of roast. First time brewing it, I was immediately reminded of yashixiang dancong. But then, second time brewing the tea, I suddenly detected a lot of milanxiang! For the following sessions, I was constantly thinking of more milan in there, comparatively. So far, this is my favourite tea for huangpian times!
