Description
This is the wrong tea to judge with your eyes, because looks can be deceiving. While these leaves won’t win any beauty contests, they perform surprisingly well when brewed.
Similar to puer huangpian, this Dancong huangpian is comprised of the old leaves and stems that have been sorted out from higher end productions. This is done after the initial processing/roasting when the tea has become maocha. The older leaves that have lost their elasticity and stems are removed to improve the appearance and consistency of the final tea.
In previous years our Bouquet was often a blend of many different teas, but this year we were lucky. This batch consists of tea picked from Aofuhou and Laocong (old bush) Baxian productions. The result is pleasantly fragrant tea plenty of fruitiness and even a touch of lychee.
While this is a solid daily drinker as it is, close your eyes and it could easily beat many regular Dancong productions that come in at a higher price.
Please note that the 250g size does not include a tin.
$0.10-0.15/gram
Varietals: Aofuhou, Baxian/凹富后, 八仙
Region: Wudong Shan, Guangdong
We recommend brewing this tea using Chaozhou style gongfu brewing. Here’s how it’s done:
For something different, you can also try cold brewing:

I was a bit worried at first because there were a lot of stems. But the smell is strong honey sweet and brews very well and flavorful. Great daily drinker.

pleasant sweetness and honeyed fruit notes that lasts quite a number of brews. fruity, with a slight crisp citrus. lovely liquor with so many layers of aromatics. budget friendly but not short on flavor.

Calling this huang pian might be generous because of the amount of stems; i was a little skeptical at first, but stems can carry a lot of sweetness and flavor. I was very pleased by this! its quite fragrant and floral with honeyed sweetness. There is consistency over multiple steepings.

Mild-mannered, easy-drinking tea. Reminds me a bit of hojicha– the leaf is quite green by the end of a session (the pictures look like mine did after an initial flash steep), and it’s very, very stem heavy.
Initial flavor and aroma are mild but very clearly citrusy– specifically grapefruit/pomelo. I rarely perceive clear citrus notes in tea, so this is very neat to me.
Body and overall strength are kind of lacking.
Endurance is so-so, but the base “stewed leaf” flavor left after the tea’s given out is pleasant and slightly cooling on the tongue, so it’s worth doing a final steep even after the tea seems done.
Pleasantly different from other “budget” dancong I’ve had, which have unilaterally been aggressively astringent with an insane caffeine buzz. Guess I’ll have to try some of this place’s proper dancongs come next season.
