Description
Aofuhou (also known as Tifuhou, Tafuhou, and a few other transliterations from the local dialect) is a sub-varietal of Songzhong. Typically this is where we would highlight the varietal’s natural berry-like fruity qualities, however this year’s tea is a bit different.
If we were to drink this tea blind, we likely wouldn’t recognize it as Aofuhou, however, it still made the cut as a top shelf dancong this year, thanks to a full, creamy quality with a salted butter note that lingers well after each sip.
Some florals appear, as well as a sweet potato fragrance that can be characteristic for this varietal. For us, the texture and creamy quality is the star, making for an engaging tea that delivers an unexpected surprise.
On top of all that, this tea comes from a clean environment with organic certification to China, US, and EU standards.

Invigorating and complex.
//Aroma// – Pie, cherry pits, sun-warmed vegetable garden, clotted cream
//Texture// – Medium body that is, as the name suggests, very creamy. It has this wonderful high end, crisp finish though that was a fun surprise.
//Flavor// – Whipped cream, marshmallow, cinnamon, anise, lemongrass, baked cherries.
//Body Sensation// – Very excited and very expansive. I’m about an hour into this tea and I feel so grounded but with so much creativity.
This tea reminds of why I fell in love with Dancong (and Oolong in general). The scent of the leaves after the first steep is so intoxicating and hypnotic. Such a vibrant aroma with savory, sweet, wild, fresh, and candied notes.

Although the description says that the fruitiness is subdued in this Aofuhou, there’s still a really pleasant layer of something almost jam-like or pie-like that comes through in this along with the cream. Delightful, dessert-like tea; a great way to begin my morning.

Indeed as others have described, there is a nice jammy fruit quality to this tea, the body to me was rounded, almost buttery in the “cream” aspect. I think the butter characteristic adds an interesting note and texture to this oolong’s broth as compared the other dancong oolongs that are more floral-forward. Yet another wonderful dancong oolong to try, very nice tea experience!
