Double Scoop 2025 Winter/Xuepian Wuye Dancong Oolong

Price range: $14.00 through $54.00

Description

It’s a great year for our annual winter leaf/xuepian Wuye varietal (Zhilan Xiang fragrance) dancong. This year’s Double Scoop feels like the closest to the original ’19 version, living up to its name with a buttery texture and salted caramel ice cream sweetness.

More than just a dessert in tea form, this tea also offers pleasant florals and even a touch of sticky rice, making this both a dynamic and affordable dancong to tide you over until the ’26 spring harvest.

Giving this 5 stars considering the price. This xuepian dancong has the attitude of a dancong, but a very different profile from that of a spring-harvest dancong. There is a hint of bamboo greenness and dried salted plum that quickly gives way to the nuttiness and savouriness of sweet toasted sesame crackers. This is supported by a pleasant astringency, minerality, and a lingering aftertaste.

Delicious moments where the next cup is always waiting nearby. A lemony note develops after a few brews, with a creamy effect that lingers for a very long time.
// Smell: Grilled tropical fruits, strongly floral, salty caramel over homemade ice cream, fruit punch cocktail, flowers outside after the rain.
// Texture: Spicy & hot tip of the tongue, with a creamy texture that floats across the palate for the first brews.
// Taste: Plain yogurt with flowers and ripe juicy peaches, grilled tropical fruits, wet rock, a hint of greenness, bar of roasted nuts with caramel underneath.
// Body sensation: Peppery effect in the throat, thick saliva, coated cheeks, good mood, introspection, steadily building energy—invigorating and motivating.

I would give it 4,5 if possible but as it is not possible I’m giving it a 5 taking a price to quality ratio.

In the cup, it’s a thick liquor with a lot of sweetness from juicy peaches and tropical fruits, balanced by a strong floral character of jasmine and gardenia flowers. It has a nice peppery energy that builds up steadily as you drink.

This oolong brings all of the floral punch of a Dancong that then mellows out with a gentle sweetness rather than fading away. The sweetness can change depending on the exact headspace, with notes dancing between honey and vanilla mostly but leaning towards a darker caramel at times as well. Additionally, there is a milky texture that rounds out the experience with a rich mouthfeel. I imagine lavender ice-cream with melted caramel topping.
