Infinity 2026 Spring Gaoligong Shan Oolong – Meridian

Price range: $9.00 through $68.00

Description

Our Infinity series oolongs use Taiwanese Ruanzhi bushes and Taiwanese processing, but come from Gaoligong Shan in western Yunnan. These use of Taiwanese cultivars and experience combine with Yunnan terroir to create a unique variant of Dong Ding Oolong.

The result is a familiar, but unique tea that is heavily influenced by the higher altitude (up to 2300m), cooler climate, and rich biodiversity of the forests in Gaoligongshan. Naturally, these teas come from a clean environment that is for all intents and purposes organic, although official certification has not been kept up in recent years.

Each tea in this series represents a step up in roast, with Dawn/Meridien grouped closer together on the greener/lighter side, and Dusk/Nadir offering a deeper roast. If you can fit in three or four sessions in a day, we recommend climbing the ladder from lightest to darkest.

Grown at 2300m, the highest in the series, this tea has a touch more roasted character on the nose, though it’s subtle and mostly gone after the rinse. What’s left is a warm fragrance that dissolves well in the soup.

A slight sweet corn flavour comes through in the fron, with a very mild nuttiness behind it, unusually reminiscent of some of our Mengding yellow teas. The soup has a touch more depth than the previous tea, while the fragrance comes out a bit brighter and livelier.

All sizes come pre-packed in 10g packets in order to minimize oxidation and keep the tea as fresh as possible from session to session.

Varietal: Taiwanese soft stem varietal (台湾小叶种乌龙软枝)
Picking Period: Spring 2026
Region: Gaoligong Shan, Yunnan

More just another mountain, Gaoligong Shan is a protected nature reserve that runs along the Yunnan-Myanmar border. The soil is rich with volcanic ash and minerals, allowing various plants to flourish and making this extremely biodiverse region in both flora and fauna. This biodiversity and more naturally occurring organic matter lends an arguably “wilder” quality to the tea from this region compared to its Taiwanese counterpart.

The mountain range peaks at over 5000m, although the growing region for these teas sits much lower, at a maximum of 2300m. Still, this is considerable higher than the typical altitude for Taiwanese Dong Ding, which reaches about 1000m.

The higher elevation, along with being situated further north than most tea growing regions in Yunnan, means it is consistently cooler. There is also a much more dramatic shift in temperature between day and night, and even snowfall during cooler months. The cool, humid climate means a slower growth cycle for the tea trees, which helps them develop a richer and more complex flavour.
