Description
As a varietal, “Milan Xiang” really doesn’t pull any punches, translating to “honey orchid fragrance”. This tea exhibits just that, with a consistent honey flavour and sweetness, along with complementary floral notes. While our 2022 version exhibited some fruitiness, we found this aspect still detectable, but a little more subdued this year.
Made from old bush, high mountain material from Da An (大庵), this tea is a good standard for what a higher end Dancong should be. There is a smooth and full feeling in the mouth, as well as a strong huigan/lasting sweetness.
Typical for the varietal, this tea is also one of our higher roasted dancongs this year, having undergone multiple traditional charcoal roastings. This method of roasting lends a somewhat elusive quality to the tea that is often compared to Yanyun. While this quality is without a fixed definition, the oversimplified way of describing the effect of traditional processing is that it creates a more dynamic taste and fragrance, as well as deepens the energy/chaqi of the tea.
Please note that the 250g size does not include a tin.
$0.90-1.00/gram
We recommend brewing this tea using Chaozhou style gongfu brewing. Here’s how it’s done:
For something different, you can also try cold brewing:

The star of this year’s dan cong selection to my taste buds, but i’m heavily biased in this for my love of toastier tea.
It has a fragrant taste that reminds me both of aromatic hops and a bright honey, and is rounded out by a slick roasty taste that brings a juicy fullness and coats the cheeks and back of the tongue.
Sports a great texture with a slight sparkling minerality on the tongue and a wonderful fresh feeling that comes up from the throat upon exhale.
This tea brings a wonderful calm and goes for many steeps. I find it’s most balanced starting with ~195°f and increasing temp after a few steeps.
