Pain & Pleasure 2022 Nannuo Raw Puer

$9.00$245.00

Description

If something gentle and light is your thing, then this is (literally) not your cup of tea. However, if you want a bold tea that makes a statement, we’ve got your covered. Made from Nannuo old tree material, this tea pulls no punches, with a prominent kuwei (pleasant bitterness) and roughness up front that yields to heavy sweetness in the back.

In the domestic (Chinese) tea scene, Nannuo teas have a bit of a reputation for being aggressive and rough when young, but pay dividends when aged, shedding some of the abrasive qualities and giving way to a sweet and a flavourful aroma. While this tea’s development is yet to be judged, it certainly fulfills the first portion of that expectation, and is suitable for those who like their young sheng on the burly side.

As with The Pleasure is All Mine White Tea, which we highly recommend as a comparative/companion tea, this tea uses old tree (maybe gushu – nobody knows the true age of the trees) material from a clean, well-maintained environment in Nannuo.

Picking Period: Pre-April 5th

I tried a few sessions via the Treat Yourself Top Shelf. Pain & Pleasure is all about the excellent mouthfeel and finish for me. There’s a delightfully bracing dryness and deep herbal qualities, followed by a calm sweetness.

I love how the tea develops between each mouthful, and I want to experience that journey for at least a couple of minutes (more if I’m patient!) before I return for the next sip.

Loving it! I had amazing long energizing session with this Nannuo raw puer.

//Smell : At the farm when the temperature is humid in the summer, seasoned bun, floral
//Texture: Creamy texture, the liquor quickly evaporates once in the mouth
//Taste : Dried grass, lovely astringency, sweet. It’s not that easy to put words on this one – maybe in the further sessions
//Body sensation: I felt motivated and energized (not a evening tea)

The transformation from steep to steep here is unreal.
Steep one: peaches and cream. Two: florals and strawberry greens. Three: a blend of the both, with added astringency. Four: bitterness marches in, extra florals. Five: back to refreshing stonefruit, even stronger now. Six: settling calm and a relaxing cha qi.
Loved the journey this tea takes. For me, this was all pleasure.

A nice yet average pu-erh. While there wasn’t much to rave about this tea, it isn’t bad by any means either. Beautiful pickings and liquor with a potent wet leaf aroma, average texture, finish and aftertaste. The big stand out for this tea is its cha-qi, with it being persistently present even from steep 1. This tea lacked in character and complexity, flavour lacked in potency and dimensionality, and the tea didn’t hold up for that many infusions. Overall, decent decent, but there’s better for this price. To me, it just felt like another young pu-erh. It definitely needs some time to develop.

Flavors: Bamboo, Cherry, Floral, Herbaceous, Mineral, Raspberry, Smoke
