We spent considerable time in Laomane this year, not just drinking tea, but taking part in the local Bulang New Year celebration as well (泼水节). As a result, we came away with a healthy selection of teas from the region that span several processing styles. Laomane teas are unique regardless of how they’re processed, which makes comparisons between these even more captivating.
Try a some power (4 x 25g samples of white, black, sheng and shou), or opt for more with 200g cakes of each tea.

One of the five villages that make up the Banzhang villages, Laomane separates itself from the domineering and renowned Laobanzhang, with a more noticeable kuwei (pleasant bitterness).
Even though the region has both bitter and “sweet” varietal tea trees, both can be considered firmly on the bitter side of the tea scale, and in most cases are picked together to give a more complete overview of the land. The only time bitter trees are picked separate are for commissions, some gushu, or single tree pickings (danzhu).
When blended with tea from some of the other villages, like Banpen, Laomane also plays a key role in dialing in a “Laobanzhang” flavour.

LaoMan’E is without a doubt my favorite, so finding this set of cakes was like a dream come true. I have been wondering what white tea from this village would taste like for a while. After resting and trying a bit from each cake, I can confidently say they are all spectacular. The white tea is fruity, with an undercurrent of silky mouthfeel, a pleasant mild bitterness with rich sweetness up front. The black tea had notes of cocoa and peaches, it was fantastic brewed with a light hand in a gaiwan, the bitterness was present but friendly, I look forward to drinking this cake quickly. The shou was a powerhouse, no funk whatsoever and with a rich silky mouthfeel, lots of leather and dark chocolate. Finally, the sheng: dry leaf exuded peaches, the soup is silky and has waves of tingly bitterness. The session ramps up with flavor and bitterness at the fourth steep, sweetness and huigan on my palate. Beautiful balance with great mouthfeel, a wonderful sheng that begs the question “what will it taste like with age?”
Overall this set of cakes exceeded my expectations, its been educational and high quality.
